PURPOSE: To raise awareness in the BC Energy Community of the issues involved in integrating intermittent renewable energy sources into the electricity grid, and to identify opportunities for innovation and technology development.
Dr. John MacDonald – “The Global Energy Gap and the Clean Energy Solution”
Dr. MacDonald is Chairman and CEO of Day4 Energy Inc., a solar energy company of which he is a co-founder. Day4 Energy is dedicated to exploiting a new photovoltaic technology targeted at making solar energy generation cost competitive with fossil fuel. Dr. MacDonald has had a distinguished career in the technology community in Canada. He was a faculty member in engineering at UBC and MIT, prior to founding MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA), Canada's principal space company. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, was named one of the “50 most influential British Columbia business leaders of the 20th Century” in 1999, and “Technology Entrepreneur of the Year” in 1995.
Ron Pernick – “Clean Energy: Global Growth, Challenges and Opportunities”
Ron Pernick is co-founder and managing director of Clean Edge (Portland, OR), the world’s first research and advisory firm devoted to the clean-tech sector. Mr. Pernick is an accomplished market research, publishing, and business development entrepreneur. He is co-author of the highly acclaimed book The Clean Tech Revolution (Collins, 2007). At Clean Edge he has co-authored more than two dozen reports on emerging clean technologies and has worked with a range of clients including multinationals, start-ups, government agencies, and investors.
Dr. Vaclav Smil – “Our Energy Future: a Reality Check”
Dr. Smil is an environmental scientist and world expert on clean energy systems, and a distinguished professor in the Environment Department at the University of Manitoba. He has published many books and articles questioning the conventional wisdom of current Western environmental and geopolitical thought. Bill Gates often cites Dr. Smil and his "phenomenal" books. Margaret Wente describes him as “the most-published and least-known thinker in Canada.” In December, 2010, FP Magazine (The Magazine of Global Politics, Economics and Ideas) placed Dr. Smil as #49 on their list of 100 Top Global Thinkers, “for keeping the West honest about its plight.”
